YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD
DESCRIPTION
These Trainee Awards recognize the scientific work of talented trainees. They are selected by a jury from eligible submissions on the basis of abstracts and posters presented during the Annual Meeting of the Society. Supervisors are encouraged to support this program by sponsoring their students. The Society emphasizes the importance of these Trainee Awards as a mean of encouragement for trainees involved in research programs related to atherosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology.
Three CSATVB Young Investigator Awards consisting of $500 each and a certificate will be granted annually by the CSATVB to selected trainees who have been involved in a research program which has led to an abstract for submission to CSATVB Annual Meeting.
All eligible candidates will be offered a Travel Subsidy
to cover the costs of registration, airfare for travel within Canada (APEX fare), ground transportation from airport to hotel, up to a maximum of three consecutive hotel nights (to a maximum 150$ per day) and meals to a maximum of 30$ per day for two days. Please note that the first hotel night and meals will apply only for the night of October 23rd 2010; the objective is to encourage trainees to participate at the CSATVB trainee workshop (on October 24th 2010). Please note that the Sunday night CSATVB Annual Dinner (on October 24th 2010) is only free for trainees who are making a presentation (poster/talk) at an approved CSATVB session during the Annual meeting. Application forms are mailed to Society members along with abstract forms for the Annual Meeting, but electronic versions are also available at the bottom of this page.

ELIGIBILITYThe applicant must be: 1. a trainee who is enrolled in a recognized program such as MD, residency, fellowship, MSc, PhD, post-doctoral fellowship (within three years of receiving his doctoral degree), at a Canadian university
2. an associate member (trainee) in good standing or a trainee who has applied for associate membership (trainee) in CSATVB prior to May 23rd, 2010. The supervisor supporting an application for an award must already be a regular CSATVB member in good standing. New regular members are nominated at each October Annual General Meeting. A member is recognized as being in good standing when current dues have been paid prior to May 23rd. A supervisor may not support more than two trainees annually.CRITERIA1. Trainee must: - be registered as CSATVB member on the official receipt of the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (registration as member of another participant society is not sufficient), - be in attendance at the annual CSATVB scientific meeting, and actually present, as first author, a poster/talk detailing the submitted abstract. With the trainees in attendance, abstracts will be judged by a CSATVB committee, who will rank the applications. 2. Abstracts are to be submitted through the on-line Canadian Cardiovascular Congress registration system (do not forget to indicate, in your submission, your affiliation with CSATVB) . However, in order to be validated for the award and the travel subsidy, a second copy of abstract accompanied by a letter from the trainee's supervisor stating that the candidate is in one of the above training programs and confirming the participation of the trainee in the investigation described in the abstract, must be submitted to the Chair CSATVB Education Committee.
3. The submitted abstract must be accepted for presentation at the annual meeting 4. Trainees must meet all the criteria to be eligible for the Young Investigator Award and the Travel Subsidy. The decision as to the eligibility of trainees for Travel Subsidies will be made by the Chair of the Education Committee, who will so inform the applicants prior to June 30th 2010.
TRAVEL SUBSIDYThe Travel Subsidy covers the costs for : 1. Registration at the CCC congress showing early registration fee (early registration deadline is August 12th) as "MEMBER IN TRAINING" for post-doc fellows (135$) or "NON-MEMBER FULL TIME STUDENT" for MSC and PhD students (135$).
2. Airfare for travel within Canada (APEX fare). Economy (excursion) airfare are obtained for tickets bought early in advance and normally including a Saturday night stay in the city where the annual meeting is held;
3. Ground transportation between airport and hotel in the city where the annual meeting is held (ground transportation includes taxi, bus shuttle or the equivalent);
4. The subsidy will cover three hotel nights (to a maximum 150$ per day) evening of October 23rd to evening of October 25th, 2010 and two-day meals (to a maximum of 30$ per day, October 25th and 26th only, free lunches being offered at the CCC Congress). The first hotel night will apply only for October 23rd to 24th night, the objective is to encourage trainees to participate at the CSATVB trainee workshop on Sunday October 24th, 2010. In order to receive a reimbursement after the annual meeting, the trainee must submit to the Treasurer, Dr Pierre Julien, prior to the 1st of December 2010, the following receipts. Please note that missing receipts or photocopies instead of originals will not be accepted: 1. The ORIGINAL CCC receipt for registration showing that the trainee was registered as CSATVB member. Please request this receipt at the CCC registration desk (email copy of the receipt is not sufficient);
2. The ORIGINAL airline ticket (back page of the airline ticket), or the ORIGINAL boarding pass with an electronic ticket showing the name of the traveler, the flight schedule, dates of flights and financial details including taxes (photocopies will be returned to the applicant);
3. Ground transportation (train, bus or car) could also be reimbursed up to the equivalent of economy airfare. However, ORIGINAL receipts for car rental, gas or ground transportation must be submitted. A reimbursement of 0.41$ / km could be allocated for someone using his personal car. Please note that ground transportation will not be reimbursed for a participant trainee living in the city area where the annual meeting is held.
4. If staying more than three days, photocopy of the hotel invoice may be submitted to obtain a reimbursement for this three-day accommodation.
APPLICATION PROCESSThe applicant should apply for the CSATVB award online at the time of submission of abstract to CCC. Additionally the Applicant and Supervisor must complete the application package and mail it to the Education Committee Chair for evaluation. The applicant package should be received by May 23rd, 2010, and must include: 1. a completed award application form
2. a letter from the supervisor as indicated above 3. a photocopy of the submitted abstract. The original abstract form is to be submitted to the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC) and the appropriate box must be ticked as CSATVB member to be considered for the award and the travel subsidy. The supervisor, if attending the CCS/CSATVB joint meeting, must also be registered as a CSATVB member.
